PR MANIFESTO ON HEALTHCARE

Yesterday, the PR had their National Convention where they revealed their manifesto.
A good piece of work. I hope that it is workable.
I have read their manifesto on Healthcare. That I know is easily achievable.

MANIFESTO RAKYAT                                                                   Pg 28

FREE BASIC HEALTH  ACCESS ENSURED

Basic health access is the people’s right. Every Malaysian is entitled to go to any government hospital to get prompt, competent and free healthcare.
Pakatan Rakyat’s position regarding  healthcare is as follows:
1. Reject all attempts to introduce a  healthcare tax such as 1Care
2. Ensure free healthcare for all Malaysians through government hospitals while
incentivizing the private sector to provide  healthcare services at a reasonable rate.
3. Offer free ward service to all citizens in all government hospitals by abolishing fees for Class 2 and Class 3 wards.
4. Abolish monopolies on pharmaceutical supplies, hospital construction, and medical infrastructure which currently  favour companies at the public’s expense.
5. Savings from abolishing monopolies will  be used to improve specialist treatments
to the low-income group for complicated surgeries including heart surgery, replacement surgery and others.
6. Fulfill the target of one doctor to 550 citizens in the first term of administration, compared with the current ratio of one  doctor to 800 citizens

Change we must. Change we can. Change we shall.

If Class 2 wards are free just like Class 3, wouldn't everybody then opt for Class 2?
How to decide who gets what?

I do not wish to take any credit for this Healthcare manifesto, so that no one gets the wrong idea.

I remember that at one meeting, I propose that in Public Hospital, first class should be full paying, without government subsidy. Second class should be half fee and third class should be free. There must be free inpatient for the poor with adequate social welfare screening. Government servants should get subsidised care. I wanted the first class to be full paying so that we can then control fees in Private Hospitals. we can then find a mean cost of care.
I am not sure who wrote the healthcare part of manifesto.
That is what we suggested.

Doc, I think that the our present system in the public hospital is quite okay although it needs some fine tuning.
The fees charged should be low and the really poor should be exempted.
And instead of charges remaining static even when prices of things like medicine have gone up, the public hospitals can also raise its charges albeit as minimally as possible.
What is also of great importance is the ability of those who manages these hospitals.
They must of individuals of impecable character and have great management capability.
In fact, a lot of things in this country can be greatly improved if only those in charge REALLY TAKE THE TROUBLE TO ENSURE THAT EXCELLENCE REIGNS - INSTEAD OF MEDIOCRITY!!!
If you look around you, I'm sure that there are many things that can be improved in this country, if there are people with the will to do so!!!!
In this respect, I hope that you can influence events towards excellence in the medical arena.

You are right. We must replace this culture of mediocrity, corruption, irresponsibility, laid backness, with one of spirit of excellence, clean and responsible, hard-working and knowledgeable.
The change must come from the top and may take a decade to filter down. After GE 13, we take the first step.
